Meta Platforms recently revealed a series of updates for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, incorporating advanced AI capabilities. Notably, a new real-time translation function is now available to all users, supporting multiple languages including English, French, Italian, and Spanish. Initially showcased at the
Connect event in October of the previous year, this feature became partially accessible in selected countries last December. A significant advantage is its offline functionality, liberating users from the need for an internet connection, as they can pre-download language packs for use during international travel.Additionally, the AI capabilities now extend to various European regions, enabling users to query the AI about visual cues through their eyewear and receive instant responses. This enhancement underscores Meta's strategic expansion into the EU market. The glasses are now equipped to integrate with messaging platforms, facilitating communication via Instagram direct messages, as well as supporting native messaging and call functions on iPhones and Android devices. Future updates are likely to include compatibility with services like
Music.Meta has hinted at launching a "real-time AI conversation" feature in the US and Canada, which would enable AI to continuously interpret and interact with the user's environment in a more natural manner. This could, for instance, suggest recipes based on the contents of a user’s refrigerator. The company further announced the Ray-Ban smart glasses will soon hit markets in Mexico, India, and the UAE, albeit without providing specific release dates.
The current second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, launched in September 2023, are built on Qualcomm's AR chip platform but lack augmented reality features, relying solely on voice interactions. These glasses are priced between $299 and $379, depending on the model. CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at the release of a third-generation product by 2025, positing that the forthcoming versions might determine the trajectory of AI eyewear in consumer electronics history.
Anticipation is building for the fall Connect conference, where Meta is expected to unveil the third iteration of the Ray-Ban smart glasses. Industry insiders suggest this new version will feature a small in-glass display, potentially driving the price significantly up compared to current models. With a predicted starting price of around $500-$600, these glasses would need to demonstrate notable improvements in camera specifications and battery life to justify the increased cost.
In parallel, Meta is broadening the accessibility of its Meta AI assistant to seven additional European countries, now including Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This expansion follows the initial European rollout in March, which had been delayed due to regulatory concerns around data privacy and protection.
