The Meta smart glasses, with their stylish design and $299 price tag, offer practical AI features that make them a leading contender in the AI hardware race, despite not having the most futuristic appearance. While other AI hardware like AI Pin and Rabbit R1 initially created excitement, they quickly faded. However, Meta's wearable stands out as a promising exception.
In a challenging year for AI wearables, The Verge's Victoria Song highlighted that the Ray-Ban Meta glasses surpassed expectations. Their appeal lies in various styles and colors, easily blending into daily life without making wearers feel like science fiction characters.
Beyond aesthetics, the price of $299 is more accessible compared to high-end alternatives like the $3,500 Vision Pro. The functionality of Meta's glasses includes AI features that identify objects, offer landmark information, generate Instagram captions, translate menus, and more, with good audio and call quality, making it a versatile tool.
According to Song, while the AI functions may not be perfect, they seamlessly integrate with the device's other capabilities, making it sufficient for everyday use. Meta aims to acclimate users to facial computing, paving the way for future advancements in AI and AR technologies.
The collaboration with Ray-Ban led to the first release of smart glasses in 2021, and by December 2023, Meta started testing multimodal AI updates, officially introducing Meta AI with Vision in the US and Canada in April. Estimates suggest Meta has sold over a million units, with multiple styles sold out, indicating strong market interest.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg is optimistic about the future of smart glasses. He envisions almost everyone wearing AI-powered smart glasses, driven by advancements in AI technology which have heightened market interest.
Meta's success hinges on the effectiveness of its AI features in making users want to wear the glasses all day for the convenience they offer. At the Meta Connect Developers Conference, significant updates on Meta AI were anticipated, with potential new releases enhancing the glasses' capabilities.
Meta is set to unveil an updated version of the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, possibly including a new chatbot assistant experience. Internally, Meta is developing the Orion mixed reality glasses, expected to feature prominently at the conference.
