Meta Platforms has announced that it will begin using public posts and comments from its European users to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI) models starting from May 27. This decision follows a temporary halt in 2023 due to regulatory concerns and signifies a pivotal move in the company’s AI development strategy. The training will encompass public content from

, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, including posts, comments, and user interactions with Meta’s generative AI tools such as AI stickers and AI prompts.

The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance the performance, inclusiveness, and safety of Meta’s AI models by grounding them in region-specific knowledge. By integrating European users’ public content, Meta aims to improve its models’ ability to interpret the region’s diverse languages, dialects, humor, and cultural nuances. This approach is designed to create a more responsive and inclusive AI experience for European users.

Meta has emphasized its commitment to transparency and user rights. Beginning this week, users in the EU, European Economic Area, and the UK will receive notifications through Meta apps and emails. These notifications will inform users about the training plans and provide a link to a simplified form allowing them to opt out if they do not wish their information to be used for AI training. Meta has stated that it will honor all objections, including those previously submitted.

The company has also clarified that no data from users under 18 or any private messages will be used in the training process. This move aligns with the practices of other tech giants, who have also used publicly available content to train their AI models. Meta’s approach is in line with the European Data Protection Board’s confirmation that its updated data framework is compliant with EU legal standards.

Despite previous backlash from privacy advocates, Meta insists that its methods are transparent and respectful of user rights. The company aims to build a more inclusive and responsive AI experience for European users, ensuring that its AI models are better equipped to understand and respond to the unique cultural and linguistic landscape of the region.
