Meta(META.US) is developing an AI-powered search engine to reduce its reliance on Microsoft and Google.
Facebook's parent Meta (META.US) is developing a search engine that can search the web and provide information to users of its artificial intelligence chatbot, according to The Information's report on Monday. The information said Meta is seeking to reduce its reliance on Google (GOOGL.US) and Microsoft's Bing (Bing), which currently provide news, sports and stock information to users of Meta's AI, according to The Information. The artificial intelligence search field is heating up, with OpenAI, the maker of chatgpt, Google and Microsoft all vying for dominance in the rapidly developing market. The report quoted a person involved in the strategy as saying that Meta's web crawler would provide users with conversational answers about current events on Meta's AI, which is its chatbot on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. Google is actively integrating its latest and most powerful artificial intelligence model, Gemini, into core products such as search, aiming to provide more conversational and intuitive search experiences. OpenAI relies on its largest investor Microsoft to provide web access through its Bing search engine to answer popular questions. However, training artificial intelligence models and search engines by scraping web data has raised concerns about copyright infringement and fair compensation for content creators. Shares of Alphabet Inc., Google's parent, retreated from gains, falling as much as 0.8%, and Meta rose 0.25% as of the time of writing.
