Meta's (META.US) Instagram has introduced a new video editing app called Edits, just as TikTok faced a ban.

Instagram released a new video editing app called Edits on the same day its rival video service TikTok briefly closed after a federal ban, though TikTok began to restore service after President-elect Donald Trump halted the ban on Jan. 20, Beijing time. Meta(META.US) subsidiary Instagram announced the new app hours after TikTok closed its service in the U.S. following a new national security law. The social media platform's head Adam Mosseri posted on Instagram on Sunday that the new app, which will launch in February, will offer "a full suite of creative tools." A Meta spokesperson said users can use edit to store video drafts, edit clips, and add green screen, overlays and transitions, among other features.
TikTok's long-term future remains uncertain as U.S. laws require its Chinese parent ByteDance to sell its U.S. business. Trump said his goal was to facilitate a joint venture where a new American owner would buy 50% of the company.
Another popular video editing app from ByteDance, CapCut, was also taken offline for U.S. users over the weekend.
Instagram is seen as one of the main beneficiaries of the TikTok ban, as it already has a similar short-form video product Reels that is widely used in the U.S. Launching a new video editing app at a time of uncertainty around TikTok may attract video creators who may be looking for a new place to edit and publish content.
After TikTok was suddenly taken offline overnight, Instagram ran ads in the Apple App Store directing people searching for TikTok to its own promotion.
