An internal memo revealed that Amazon (AMZN.US) is discontinuing some of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The e-commerce giant stated that it is conducting a comprehensive review of hundreds of programs and "phasing out outdated plans and materials." Facebook's parent company, Meta (META.US), also took similar action last Friday, abruptly ending its primary DEI program, according to reports. Other companies, including McDonald's, Walmart, and Ford, have also made changes to their DEI programs in recent months. Conservative opposition and the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action in 2023 prompted many companies to alter or terminate their DEI projects. Amazon, the second-largest private employer in the US after Walmart, recently modified its "Our Positions" page, which outlines the company's positions on various policy issues. According to the Wayback Machine of the Internet Archive, there were separate sections for "Equality for Black People," "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion," and "LGBTQ+ Rights" before. The current page has consolidated these sections into a single paragraph. The section states that Amazon believes in creating a diverse and inclusive company, and any unfair treatment of anyone is unacceptable. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated in a statement: "We update the page periodically to ensure it reflects the updates we make to various projects and positions."
