Meta Announces $200,000 in Funding for 12 AI Startups in Sub-Saharan Africa

Meta has awarded $200,000 in funding to 12 AI startups from Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa through its program. The initiative, aimed at addressing critical challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and public services, culminated in Demo Day events across the four countries, where winners were announced and celebrated. The top three startups from each nation will also compete for an additional $100,000 in regional funding at the AI Summit 2025 in Dubai, scheduled for November 3–4, 2025, as reported by Lifestyle & Tech.

The winners, selected from over 1,400 applications, showcase AI-driven solutions tailored to local needs. In Nigeria, secured first place with a $25,000 prize for its AI-native electronic medical record platform designed to eliminate medication errors. Kenya's won $25,000 for its AI-powered public health communication tools, while Senegal's received the same amount for its offline e-learning platform for community health workers. South Africa's took first place with a $25,000 award for its AI-driven marketplace connecting farmers and buyers. Each country's second- and third-place winners also received $15,000 and $10,000, respectively, to scale their innovations, TechNext24 reported.

The accelerator, which operated over six weeks, included tailored business sessions, technical workshops with Meta engineers, and mentorship from AI specialists and investors. Beyond the initial funding, all 40 participating startups will receive six months of post-program support, including business advisory services, ecosystem exposure, and early access to Meta's tools. This phase aims to help them refine their solutions and bring them to market effectively, according to Lifestyle & Tech.

Balkissa Ide Siddo, Director for Public Policy across Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, emphasized the program's role in fostering inclusive AI innovation. "The solutions developed by these startups demonstrate the immense potential of AI to address critical challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, public services, and public safety," she stated. The program's success, she noted, reflects collaboration with national ministries and local partners to ensure that AI advancements align with regional priorities, TechNext24 reported.

The winners' projects highlight the diverse applications of AI in Africa. For instance, in Nigeria is developing an AI-powered diagnostic tool to improve patient care, while in Senegal uses AI to bridge data gaps with market intelligence platforms. In South Africa, is leveraging AI to align workforce training with business goals, and in Kenya is addressing diagnostic gaps through teleradiology tools.
