Meta is preparing to launch its Hypernova smart glasses in September, marking a significant step forward in the company’s long-term vision for augmented reality (AR) and wearable computing. The device will feature a small digital display in the right lens, allowing users to view notifications, photos, and mini-applications directly in their field of view. Priced at $800, the glasses represent a strategic pricing shift from earlier estimates of $1,000–$1,400. The reduction is attributed to
accepting lower margins to boost adoption, a move consistent with broader trends in the wearable technology market where affordability is key to consumer acceptance [1].The Hypernova glasses will be sold in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the eyewear manufacturer behind the Ray-Ban and Oakley brands. This collaboration has already proven successful with the Ray-Ban Stories line, which has seen a 200% year-over-year sales increase. The new glasses will build on this momentum with a more advanced feature set, including an embedded display and a neural wristband for gesture-based controls. The wristband, developed by Meta’s CTRL Labs, uses sEMG (surface electromyography) technology to interpret hand movements, enabling users to interact with the glasses without the need for visible hand gestures [1].
According to a July letter from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Meta, the Hypernova device will support a range of functionalities, including taking and sharing photos and videos, making phone calls, and interacting with an AI assistant through voice, display, and manual inputs. The device will also feature a smartphone-quality camera and run a customized version of Android, though it is unlikely to support a dedicated app store [1]. These features position the glasses as a hybrid device—neither fully standalone nor a direct competitor to smartphones, but a companion device that enhances mobile capabilities through AR and AI.
Industry analysts have noted that the Hypernova represents a stepping stone toward Meta’s ultimate goal of replacing smartphones with wearable computing. Frederick Stanbrell, head of wearables at IDC, stated that the glasses are “likely the first generation of a device that Mark Zuckerberg intends to one day replace phones.” However, he added that the current iteration is not a standalone device and is instead designed to work in tandem with existing mobile hardware [3]. Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, emphasized the benefits of a monocular display—affordability, reduced weight, and simpler structural design—factors that may influence user adoption [1].
The launch of Hypernova will also coincide with the announcement of a third-generation version of Meta’s voice-only smart glasses at the company’s annual Connect conference. This device, also developed with EssilorLuxottica, will feature capacitive touch functionality, expanding the interaction methods available to users [1]. Meanwhile, the Hypernova wristband will continue to serve as a testbed for future full AR glasses, with data collected from early users expected to refine gesture-based input systems and improve machine learning models that interpret muscle signals [1].
Meta’s pricing and feature strategy reflects its broader ambitions in the smart glasses market. The global market was valued at nearly $2 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $8 billion by 2030, with Meta holding more than three-quarters of the market share [4]. By reducing the price point and expanding the functionality of its wearable offerings, Meta is positioning itself to capture a significant portion of this growing market while also laying the foundation for future AR products like the Orion glasses. As the company continues to refine its wearable technology, the success of Hypernova will serve as a critical indicator of whether consumers are ready to embrace a future where glasses are not just an accessory, but a computing platform.
