Meta Hires OpenAI Researchers to Boost AI Capabilities

Meta has recently made significant strides in its artificial intelligence (AI) endeavors by hiring Trapit Bansal, a former key researcher at OpenAI. Bansal played a pivotal role in developing OpenAI's O1 reasoning AI model. This hire follows the addition of other former OpenAI researchers, including Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, to Meta's team. These strategic hires are part of Meta's broader initiative to enhance its AI capabilities and position itself as a leader in the AI sector.
Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, has outlined the essential characteristics of intelligent behavior that the company aims to replicate in its AI models. These characteristics include understanding the physical world, having persistent memory, reasoning, and planning complex actions, particularly hierarchical planning. Meta's focus on these aspects underscores its commitment to developing AI that can operate effectively in real-world scenarios.
The company's AI development efforts have gained momentum as governments worldwide prioritize advancements in AI to stay competitive in the global AI race. Meta plans to leverage video data and robotics to train its AI models using real-world scenarios, thereby cultivating more intelligent and adaptive AI systems.
In addition to hiring top talent, Meta has made several strategic moves to bolster its AI infrastructure. In June, the company acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI, a data labeling company. This acquisition includes Scale AI CEO joining Meta to collaborate on further AI development. Meta has also signed a 20-year nuclear energy deal to receive 1.1 gigawatts of power for its AI data centers and infrastructure. The energy will be sourced from Clinton Clean Energy Center, with delivery starting in 2027.
Furthermore, Meta has partnered with a defense contractor specializing in AI and autonomous systems, to develop AI-powered augmented reality headsets for the military. These headsets will integrate an AI-powered information system that organizes tactical battlefield data from various sensors and weapons platforms into a comprehensive information source for soldiers.
Meta's aggressive pursuit of AI talent and infrastructure reflects its ambition to become a dominant player in the AI landscape.
