Meta Faces AI Hurdles as Behemoth Delays Stir Internal Doubts and Stock Dips
Meta's stock experienced a drop of up to 3.2% following reports that the Facebook parent company intends to delay the release of its flagship artificial intelligence model, known as "Behemoth". Insiders disclosed challenges faced by engineers in enhancing Behemoth’s capabilities, stirring concerns among staff about whether the improvements from previous versions justify its public release.
The delayed launch has provoked internal scrutiny regarding the strategic direction of Meta’s multi-billion-dollar investments in artificial intelligence. Sources suggest difficulties in significantly advancing the large language model’s capabilities have led to doubts among employees about whether the enhancements warrant proceeding with an official launch. Initially, Behemoth was scheduled for an April release to coincide with Meta’s inaugural AI conference for developers. Smaller models in the Llama AI series were unveiled during this event, but Behemoth’s projected release target was pushed to June, now extending into the fall or beyond.
Previously, Meta has been praised for its swiftness in the global AI race, committing billions to develop technologies underpinning chatbots on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Meta anticipates spending up to $72 billion this year, primarily to advance CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambitious AI objectives. Despite this expenditure, Zuckerberg and other Meta executives have refrained from solid commitments regarding Behemoth’s release timeline. There is potential for an earlier unveiling, possibly with limited functionalities, yet insiders assert concerns remain about whether its performance aligns with Meta’s external claims.
A spokesperson from Meta declined to comment. Additionally, dissatisfaction reportedly brews among Meta’s executives about the team responsible for building the Llama 4 model, as they are perceived to be hindering progress on Behemoth. The possibility of significant leadership changes within Meta's AI products division is being contemplated as a response to these setbacks.
