META --

Meta is set to launch its third generation of Ray-Ban smart glasses later this year, as reported by News IT Home. This new iteration marks a significant technological advancement with the introduction of a Heads-Up Display (HUD), effectively transitioning these glasses into augmented reality (AR) devices.

Since 2019, Meta has been collaborating with EssilorLuxottica to produce smart eyewear. The first version was launched in 2021, beginning this line of innovation under the Facebook brand. By the fall of 2023, the second edition, branded as Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, was rolled out, featuring enhancements over the initial model, particularly in camera and audio capabilities.

The second generation did not incorporate a HUD, relying instead on voice commands and capacitive touch sensors for functionalities like capturing photos, recording videos, and playing music. These glasses additionally boasted AI features that utilized the camera's sensors to recognize objects with the help of cloud-based intelligence.

Notably, the partnership between Meta and EssilorLuxottica has been extended until 2030, as the companies aim to continue their innovation streak in smart eyewear. This long-term collaboration suggests a robust commitment to build and enhance their range of AR interfaces, with potential further integrations and improvements in future versions.

As Meta accelerates its strategic push into wearable technology, these advancements represent its ambition to redefine personal computing platforms, potentially moving beyond smartphones to next-generation AR devices. However, the challenge remains for Meta to balance high performance with consumer-friendly price points amidst a competitive landscape.
