Merck Animal Health Survey Reveals Gaps in Flea and Tick Prevention, Highlights Need for Year-Round Care

A Merck Animal Health survey of 4,072 pet owners and 582 veterinarians across 15 countries reveals significant gaps in pet owner adherence to flea and tick prevention protocols. Two-thirds of U.S. veterinarians report non-compliance with year-round treatment plans, and most pet owners prefer long-duration prescription medications over frequent treatments. The study highlights the need for education and awareness about maintaining year-round prevention strategies.

A recent survey conducted by Merck Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside of the United States and Canada, has revealed significant gaps in pet owner adherence to flea and tick prevention protocols. The survey, titled "Pet Owner & Vet Perspectives on Parasite Treatment and Prevention: A Global Survey," involved 4,072 pet owners and 582 veterinarians across 15 countries [1].

The survey found that while 83% of pet owners consider flea and tick treatment crucial, many face challenges in remembering to adhere to a care plan. In the United States, two-thirds of veterinarians reported non-compliance with year-round treatment plans, with pet owners more likely to miss doses or not administer prevention medication at all [1].

Despite confidence in administering flea and tick medication, around half of pet owners (56%) admit that administering these solutions can be difficult. Moreover, 46% of dog owners and 51% of cat owners have forgotten to administer flea and tick treatment in the past year [1].

The survey also highlighted a disconnect between pet owners and veterinarians regarding the administration of flea and tick medication. While 80% of pet owners feel confident in administering the medication, 74% of veterinarians worry about pet owners not consistently administering the preventatives [1].

The findings underscore the need for targeted education and awareness about the importance of year-round flea and tick prevention. Rob Armstrong, DVM, DVSc, Global Companion Animal Parasiticides Marketing, Merck Animal Health, noted, "Pet owners are encouraged to visit their veterinarian at least once a year and use that opportunity to discuss the most effective strategies for year-round flea and tick protection" [1].

In response to these challenges, both pet owners and veterinarians globally and in the United States are open to trying long-duration prescription medications to ensure year-round compliance. Globally, two-thirds of veterinarians would recommend an annual medication option, and three in four pet owners are likely to try a once-yearly medication [1].

The survey also found that while most pet owners are aware of flea and tick threats to their pet's health, only 40% strongly agree that it is a threat to their personal health. This lack of awareness highlights the need for increased education on the potential health risks associated with flea and tick infestations [1].

The study methodology involved an online survey conducted by Savanta on behalf of Merck Animal Health among pet owners and veterinarians in 15 countries. The research was conducted between December 23, 2024, and January 28, 2025 [1].
