Melexis Q2 2026: The Recovery Is About Mix and Capacity, Not Momentum

Melexis reported Q2 2026 sales of €217.1 million, beating consensus revenue estimates of €210.2 million by nearly €7 million. Earnings per share came in at €0.76, above the €0.71 expectation. Gross margin expanded to 40.5%, up 90 basis points sequentially. The natural reading of those numbers is a broadening recovery in automotive sensor demand, with new growth optionality from robotics and AI data centers providing tailwinds.
That reading misses the actual drivers. Melexis's recovery is not being carried by an acceleration in unit demand. It is being carried by product mix improvement, a reduction in cost of yield, and an inventory cycle that is finally normalizing after the 2024–2025 automotive downturn. The robotics and data center stories are real in their early stages but are not the load-bearing elements of this quarter. Treating them as such risks mispricing the risk.

Revenue: The Beat Was Against a Low Bar
The €7 million revenue beat looks impressive until you contextualize it. Year-over-year growth was 2.58%. That is not a demand surge; that is a return to flat after a sharp contraction in 2024, when the stock fell 38%. Sequential growth of 7% is healthier, but it is also partly the result of distributors and direct customers restocking after running through depleted inventories.
The China market is the actual demand bright spot. Q2 revenue from China was strong, and management expects Q3 to reach a record level. But the driver there is domestic Chinese OEMs gaining share in position sensors, lighting, and solar current sensors, not an export-led ramp. The rest of the world showed broader demand recovery, but without the force that would signal structural reacceleration.
The implication is fairly straightforward. The market is treating a normalization quarter as a growth quarter. The distinction matters because normalization has a ceiling; growth does not.
Gross Margin: Mix and Cost of Yield, Not Pricing
Gross margin of 40.5% is a meaningful sequential improvement. But management was explicit about what drove it: lower cost of yield and favorable product mix. There were no pricing increases in 2026. Management is prioritizing volume and long-term customer relationships over short-term margin expansion through price hikes.
Operating profit came in at €38.6 million, a 17.8% margin, up 8% year-over-year and 16% sequentially. Wage inflation limited operating leverage. That tells you where the structural pressure sits — not in wafer cost, but in European labor cost, which is moving in the wrong direction.
The company's long-term gross margin target is 45%, expected by 2027. Reaching that target requires three things: continued cost-yield improvement, further product mix shift toward higher-margin products, and a footprint migration to Asia. Management has not yet provided a timeline for how much of that footprint shift is priced into 2026 versus 2027. That is the data gap that investors should press on.
Capex and Supply: Discipline, Not Expansion
Full-year 2026 capex is guided at €40 million, unchanged from the guidance given at the Q4 2025 results in February. That figure is small for a company with full-year 2025 revenue of €839.6 million — capex as a percentage of revenue is roughly 4.8%. Melexis is not expanding capacity. It is maintaining it.
Wafer supply through X-FAB is adequate. Assembly capacity is described as "tight but managed." Inventory was €270 million at the end of Q2, down from €300 million at year-end 2025, partly due to wafer revaluation and higher consumption. Management plans to rebuild inventory strategically.
The supply side of Melexis's business is characterized by constraint, not abundance. The company is not flooding the market with product. It is managing a constrained pipeline and relying on inventory rebuilding to smooth delivery. That is the correct posture in the current environment, but it also means the company cannot respond quickly if demand does reaccelerate. The 4–5 month order visibility window is too short to scale meaningfully.
Robotics and Data Centers: Real But Not Material
The earnings call generated the most interest around two new growth narratives: humanoid robotics and AI data center infrastructure. Both deserve scrutiny, not because they are fraudulent, but because their contribution to 2026 earnings is effectively zero.
Robotics generated "real revenues" in Q2 with higher orders expected in Q3. Position sensors and motor drivers are being deployed in U.S. humanoid robot joints. Tactile sensors are in the design-win phase. Management noted potential for €10 million in 2027, but emphasized that this is not guaranteed. That is a useful number — €10 million on a €2.7 billion market cap is a 0.37% revenue contribution at most, even if it materializes fully.
Data center contribution is even smaller. Liquid cooling pressure sensors and smart drivers launched in Q1 are in the early adoption phase. A 48V driver for AI data centers is coming next year. Revenue is explicitly described as "not yet material."
The market often rewards optionality narratives before the revenue arrives. But the investor needs to ask whether the current valuation already prices in outcomes that management has labeled uncertain. At approximately 3.5 times trailing sales, Melexis is trading at a premium to many analog semiconductor peers. That premium is defensible only if margin expansion to 45% and revenue growth reacceleration both materialize. It is not defensible if the robotics and data center stories take three years to become single-digit revenue contributors.
Valuation: The Stock Is Up, the Earnings Are Down
The stock fell 2.48% on the day of the earnings release to €67.00, with a market capitalization of €2.7 billion. The stock is up approximately 23% year-to-date through late July and nearly 30% as of the first week of August. That is a strong price performance despite the fact that EPS declined 19% year-over-year, from €0.94 in Q2 2025 to €0.76 in Q2 2026. The decline is driven by higher tax rates and increased depreciation, but the trajectory is worth noting.
Year-to-date outperformance against the BEL 20 benchmark (29.6% versus 13.8% through July 8) tells you that the market is rewarding the robotics and data center optionality, the China recovery, and the sequential momentum. It is not yet rewarding year-over-year earnings growth, because there isn't any. The question for the investor is whether the sequential trajectory is sufficient to justify the premium, or whether the market is front-running outcomes that management has not committed to.
Investor Takeaway
The key issue for Melexis investors is not whether automotive demand has stabilized. It is whether the margin trajectory to 45% by 2027 holds without pricing power, and whether the robotics and data center optionality materializes fast enough to justify the current valuation premium.
Three specific conditions will determine the answer:
- China revenue follows through to a record Q3. Management has signaled this is likely. If it doesn't, the domestic OEM-driven growth narrative weakens.
- Footprint migration to Asia proceeds on schedule. This is the only path to the 45% gross margin target that does not require pricing increases. Wage inflation in Europe makes this a constraint, not an option.
- Robotics revenue exceeds the €10 million 2027 ceiling. If management can cite actual design wins beyond the "phase" stage and revenue in the mid-single-digit millions for 2026, the optionality premium becomes more defensible. If not, the robotics story remains a narrative, not a financial driver.
Melexis is a well-run company in a stabilizing market. But the earnings beat this quarter was driven by mix, cost of yield, and inventory normalization. Those are recovery mechanics, not growth mechanics. The stock's performance has assumed the latter. Until the data supports it, the gap between the narrative and the fundamentals remains the defining risk.
