Medtronic's Heart Devices Are Outgrowing the Rest of Med-Tech — and Why the Market Hasn't Priced It In


Medtronic's heart business has quietly become the fastest-growing engine in all of med-tech, and the driver is not some new blockbuster drug or a wave of acquisitions. It's a single next-generation technology for treating an irregular heartbeat — and the fact that MedtronicMDT-- arrived at it second, then leapfrogged the leader.
The numbers that make you stop come straight out of the quarter Medtronic reported on September 1. Cardiac ablation solutions — the tools that burn or pulse away the tissue causing atrial fibrillation, or AFib — grew 88% year over year. That lifted the entire cardiovascular segment, which accounts for roughly 40% of revenue, up nearly 20% to $3.9 billion. The company raised its full-year growth forecast twice in the prior fiscal year and is now guiding organic revenue up 7.25% to 7.75% for fiscal 2027. For a company whose growth has cranked along in the mid-single digits for most of a decade, that is a genuine change — one that management says it raised guidance on, not merely reported.
Why pulsed field ablation is a generation gap
To see why this matters, you need the one product distinction that actually decides the outcome. Treating AFib — a condition affecting many millions of people and climbing — used to mean thermal ablation: radiofrequency or cryoenergy that heats or freezes the heart tissue causing the abnormal rhythm, with a risk of collateral damage to the surrounding structures. Pulsed field ablation does the same job with short bursts of electrical pulses targeted at the tissue, which cleanly spares what sits next to it.
That isn't a marginal spec improvement. It's a generation gap of the kind that reorders a market — safer, faster procedures that let more physicians treat more patients. A widely watched Citi physicians survey predicted PFA would overtake radiofrequency ablation as the majority of AFib procedures as early as 2025, and the analyst community sized the global market at about $2 billion for 2026 with a double-digit compound growth rate ahead. The category was a rare growth island in an otherwise mature device business, and it is where the battle for AFib is now being fought.
The comeback nobody saw coming
Here is the part that inverts the "Medtronic is behind" narrative. Medtronic was actually first to win FDA approval for a PFA system in December 2023, and enjoyed a brief monopoly. Then Boston Scientific's rival system, Farapulse, reached the market and physicians swung hard toward it. For a stretch, the story in the trade press was that Boston Scientific had seized the U.S. PFA category from Medtronic's early lead.
Medtronic answered with an architectural move rather than a pricing one. In late 2024 it won FDA approval for its Affera mapping and ablation system with the Sphere-9 catheter — a single all-in-one device that can map the heart, ablate it with either pulsed field or radiofrequency energy, and validate the result, in one tool. Where competitors typically pair a separate mapping platform with a separate ablation catheter, Sphere-9 collapses several steps of a procedure into one instrument. That is a capability-and-workflow argument, the kind that wins electrophysiologists over on total procedure economics rather than on one headline number.
The financial result followed. Cardiac ablation growth accelerated through fiscal 2026 — up 71% in the fall quarter, then 78%, with U.S. growth above 120% and additional U.S. share gains — before landing at 88% in the first quarter of fiscal 2027. In that latest quarter, electrophysiology therapies as a whole grew 29.5%, and U.S. electrophysiology revenue rose 41%. This is not guidance or a roadmap claim; it is revenue that has already reached the income statement.

What a beat-and-raise is actually worth
Now the part a retail holder actually cares about: what does an accelerating heart business change about the investment case?
Put the flattering details aside first. The fiscal 2027 first quarter included a 53rd week, worth roughly $570 million of the organic growth, so the 13.7% headline growth overstates the underlying run rate. And the market has noticed the acceleration without paying up for it: despite the beat-and-raise and a fifth straight earnings beat, the stock sits near the middle of its 52-week range of about $73 to $106 and is modestly down for the year. The re-rating the numbers might justify has not fully happened.
That is the tension worth weighing. On one side, Medtronic is no longer only a slow compounder. It still pays a roughly 3% dividend after 49 consecutive years of increases, and around 22 times trailing earnings it trades like a value-and-yield staple. Now there is an operational growth lever underneath it — a genuinely new product generation gaining share in a fast-growing category, delivered by a $117 billion, 10-figure-R&D giant with the sales force to distribute it worldwide.
On the other side, one hot product line does not re-rate an entire diversified company, and the category is a contested one. Boston Scientific remains a formidable rival in PFA, Johnson & Johnson's Biosense Webster a third player, and neither is standing still. The very thing that makes this quarter a buying story — an expensive, high-growth technology with share momentum — is also a race with delivery risk attached.
Listen to the company rather than the share price: management raised guidance on delivered results, and its own leadership has called the cardiac ablation portfolio among its "highest growth opportunities." The judgment that follows is not whether Medtronic's heart business is growing — the evidence says it is, and faster than the rest of the company or the industry. It's whether that single-generation acceleration is durable enough to justify the position at today's multiple, or whether the same capital is better deployed where the curve is steeper. The operating proof-point is on the far side of the next few quarters' U.S. share numbers — and that is a fact only the next earnings reports will deliver.
