This week at IBC, Europe's big broadcast trade show in Amsterdam, a Vancouver company called Netskrt will stand beside OracleORCL-- and demonstrate a new way to push live video to millions of viewers at once. It built that business on modest money: a $10 million CAD Series A in May 2024 led by Yaletown Partners alongside InBC Investment Corp., a British Columbia provincial Crown investment fund that manages a $500 million strategic pool. On that capital base, a booth at IBC 2026 is a fundraise and sales exercise, not a revenue event. The only way an ordinary investor touches this company is if it later raises again publicly or goes public — both years away and unannounced.

So what is actually being shown? Media Over QUIC (MOQ) is an IETF working-group protocol still in draft — the latest transport draft, revision 21, is dated this month and has not reached final RFC status. Its pitch is a consolidation: today's live stack splits into RTMP for ingest, HLS/DASH for delivery, and WebRTC for the rare sub-second cases. MOQ wants one publish/subscribe transport over QUIC that can scale to a massive live audience at sub-second latency. That solves a real, binding problem: when a Super Bowl-sized audience hits at once, the "thundering herd" forces a tradeoff between how low the latency can go and how much server capacity the origin has to throw at the spike. Eleven vendors, including AWS and Bitmovin, showed interoperable MOQ at NAB earlier this year; the ecosystem is being socialized, not yet adopted.

That distinction is the whole story here. The IBC showcase, built by the very companies trying to sell the standard, connects an Oracle Video Edge origin to MOQ relay capacity running across Netskrt, Cloudflare, and MainStreaming — and, in a separate Paramount pipeline, carries content through Oracle's edge to a Netskrt endpoint and a Paramount player. The on-stage claim is "interoperability," which means the pieces link up in a controlled, participant-built environment. That is marketing doing its job: trade shows are where competing vendors coax a pre-standard into enough alignment to look real. It says nothing about whether a broadcaster has run MOQ in production, at what per-stream cost it holds, or whether the cable-and-edge infrastructure already paid for with HLS/DASH will be ripped out to get it.

Which brings us to the only part a U.S. retail investor can actually own. The public companies orbiting this demo — Oracle above all, plus Cloudflare and Paramount — are all far too big for this display to matter to their numbers. Oracle Video Edge is a single niche product line inside Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, itself one line inside a mega-cap software-and-database company. Even a MOQ standard that succeeds would only help Oracle if media workloads migrate to its cloud at meaningful scale — a long, unproven path, not a trade-show outcome. A standards demo at a broadcast conference is a rounding error against that backdrop, and the stock price at any given week reflects far larger forces: Oracle is a volatile mega-cap trading roughly a fifth below its 52-week high.

The useful judgment here is not buy, sell, or even watchlist — there is no security to buy. It is a lesson in where the evidence lives. A keynote, a launch, and a trade-show showcase are all the same genre: a positioning claim that earns its way into an investment case only when independent engineering and economics confirm it. For Media Over QUIC, the confirming evidence would be a real broadcaster running it at scale on better per-unit cost than the HLS/DASH stack it has to displace. Nothing in this week's press release is that evidence. Treat the headline as exactly what it is — a private company and its ecosystem partners celebrating interoperability — and keep score on adoption, not applause.
