To attract price-sensitive customers and compete with McDonald's (MCD.US) $5 meal, Yum Brands (YUM.US)'s KFC is expanding its $5 Extra Value Meal, as well as more deals on its digital platform. The KFC $5 Extra Value Meal now includes eight pieces of chicken with fries or a large mashed potato bowl, or two chicken strips, the company said.
"As customers look for more value from the brand, we are expanding the KFC flavor lineup with new KFC Fan Favorites, all for just $5," said Nick Chavez, KFC U.S. chief marketing officer, in a statement. The company will also offer free delivery on any order through the KFC app or KFC.com starting Thursday, September 5, as football season kicks off.
It's worth noting that Wendy's (WEN.US), Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International (QSR.US), and other fast-food rivals have all responded to McDonald's $5 meal success with their own.
