McDonald’s Faces Bitcoin Proposal Ahead of Shareholder Meeting
An activist shareholder is urging McDonald’s (MCD) to incorporate Bitcoin (BTC) into its balance sheet ahead of the company’s annual shareholder meeting scheduled for May. The National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), a Washington-based group and McDonald’s shareholder, has proposed that the company consider adding Bitcoin to its treasury. The NCPPR argues that a company’s value, especially during inflationary times, is not only measured by the profitability of its primary business but also by how wisely it invests its assets. The group cited companies such as Strategy (MSTR) that have experienced significant growth since adopting Bitcoin.
The shareholder believes that by adopting Bitcoin, McDonald’s could potentially boost its stock value. However, it appears unlikely that McDonald’s will entertain the Bitcoin proposal. Lawyers for the restaurant chain have reached out to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to confirm that they can exclude the Bitcoin proposal from the annual shareholders’ meeting. McDonald’s lawyers argued that the Bitcoin proposal falls under ordinary business operations or investment strategies, which are decisions for the company’s board of directors, not its shareholders. The SEC agreed, stating that there appears to be some basis for McDonald’s view that the company may exclude the proposal.
The National Center for Public Policy Research has a history of advocating for companies to adopt Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Previously, the activist shareholder has requested both Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) to adopt Bitcoin, but both companies declined the request. McDonald’s stock has risen 10% so far in 2025.
Despite the push from the activist shareholder, McDonald’s stock has a consensus Moderate Buy rating among analysts. This rating is based on 15 Buy and 10 Hold recommendations assigned in the last three months. The average price target for McDonald’s stock is $326.71, implying a 3.42% upside from current levels.
