Marks & Spencer resumes online orders to most of the UK
Marks & Spencer (M&S) has resumed online orders to most of the UK, six weeks after a cyber-attack forced the retailer to pause its online shopping services. The retailer announced on Tuesday that customers can now place online orders with standard delivery to England, Scotland, and Wales [3]. Deliveries to Northern Ireland are expected to resume in the coming weeks.
The cyber-attack, attributed to a hacking collective known as Scattered Spider, occurred over the Easter weekend and led to a significant disruption in M&S's online operations. The retailer estimates that it lost about £25 million in online clothing and homewares sales each week during the shutdown [1]. M&S expects the hack to cost it up to £300 million in profits for the 2025/26 financial year, with about half of that expected to be offset by insurance and other measures [1].
M&S has been working to recover from the attack, investing in its IT systems and website as part of the systems rebuild forced by the hackers. The retailer expects to resume click and collect, next-day delivery, nominated-day delivery, and international ordering in the coming weeks [3].
The cyber-attack on M&S follows similar incidents reported by other retailers, including the Co-op, Harrods, Adidas, and Victoria's Secret. The attack on M&S has raised concerns about the security of online retail operations and the potential impact on consumer trust.
