Five of the Magnificent Seven reported earnings between July 22 and July 30, 2026. Every single one posted double-digit revenue growth. Two of them were rewarded. Three were punished.

The dividing line had nothing to do with how much they spent on AI.

Alphabet reported $119.8 billion in revenue, up 24% year over year. Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion. The stock fell more than 7%. MetaMETA-- reported $60.8 billion in revenue, up 28%. Advertising alone grew 27%. The stock fell roughly 10%. Meanwhile, Microsoft reported Azure growth of 43% and its stock rose about 3% in after-hours trading. AmazonAMZN-- reported AWS growth of 37% and its stock surged 8% to 10%.

Same industry. Same AI buildout. Opposite verdicts.

The Narrative Violation

The dominant headline coming out of earnings week was clear: the market is revolting against AI overspending. The premise is that investors are finally done rewarding tech companies for throwing money at data centers and chips without knowing when the money comes back.

The data does not support this framing.

Microsoft guided for roughly $190 billion in calendar 2026 capital expenditures and is expecting even more in fiscal 2027. Amazon's trailing-twelve-month capex sits at $173 billion and CEO Andy Jassy said spending won't keep up with demand. Alphabet raised its 2026 capex guide to $195–$205 billion. Meta guided $130–$145 billion. All four of these numbers are staggering. All four are infrastructure-level bets on AI that dwarf anything else in corporate America.

The market rewarded MicrosoftMSFT-- and Amazon. It punished Alphabet and Meta.

The difference is revenue legibility. Microsoft and Amazon can point to a metered, externally billed, and accelerating cloud revenue line that directly maps to what they're building. Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion on a trailing-twelve-month basis for the first time. AWS grew 37% in the quarter, its fastest pace in 18 quarters. Microsoft's Copilot hit over 30 million paid seats. The spend is visibly converting into revenue.

Alphabet has a booming cloud business too-82% growth is extraordinary. But its capex guide crossed what one analyst called the "$200 billion do-not-cross line," and its free cash flow turned negative for the first time since its 2004 IPO. The market needs to see that the spending is earning its way. Meta has no cloud revenue line at all, and its $31.1 billion in quarterly capex consumed roughly 98% of its $31.86 billion in operating cash flow, leaving $784 million in free cash flow-down 91% year over year.

What Goldman Sachs Sees

Goldman Sachs Research noted in December 2025 that the average stock price correlation across large public AI hyperscalers had declined from 80% to just 20% since June 2025. Companies are no longer trading as a monolith. The firm noted that investors are rotating away from AI infrastructure companies where operating earnings growth is under pressure and where capex is debt-funded, while rewarding companies demonstrating a clear link between capex and revenues-specifically the biggest cloud platform operators.

As of December 2025, the consensus estimate for 2026 hyperscaler capex was $527 billion, up from $465 billion at the start of third-quarter earnings. Goldman said analysts have consistently underestimated AI capex spending. The number is only going higher.

What Goldman calls the "combination of continued corporate AI adoption and growing concerns about the AI infrastructure complex" is not a sign of an AI winter. It's a sign of a market maturing into its second phase.

The Abundance-Scarcity Shift

The first phase of the AI trade was straightforward: whoever spent the most on infrastructure got rewarded, because the risk was falling behind. The scarcity was compute and capacity. If you had billions to build data centers, you won.

The second phase is harder. The abundance is compute-everyone is building. The scarcity is proof that the compute you build actually generates revenue faster than you're spending. The market is no longer asking "are you building AI infrastructure?" It's asking "show me the receipts."

That is not bearish. It is the natural evolution of any infrastructure cycle. When roads were new, everyone got credit for laying asphalt. Once the network exists, the winners are the ones who run the most traffic on it. AI is crossing that threshold right now.

The Permabear Take Is Wrong

The loud voices say an AI winter is coming. Jason Lemire at Bold Wealth Partners told Fortune: "There is going to be an AI winter at some point. When you look at how exceptional margins are-especially in memory-it is impossible to maintain those over a long timeframe." Goldman Sachs flagged that "the timing of an eventual slowdown in capex growth poses a risk to these companies' valuations."

These are valid concerns about margin compression and cyclicality in the semiconductor layer. But the evidence from earnings week does not point to AI demand collapsing.

Azure grew 43%. AWS grew 37%. GoogleGOOGL-- Cloud grew 82%. Alphabet's cloud backlog hit $514 billion. Microsoft said "Azure demand is greater than supply" and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said capex won't keep up with forecasted demand in 2026. These are not companies running from the AI trade. They're running out of capacity to fulfill it.

The semiconductor index-the Philadelphia SOX-was up 101% through the first half of 2026 and lost 17% in July. Its 100-day volatility is the highest since 2020. The wild swings are not a sign of demand death. They're the volatility that accompanies a market working through which chipmakers actually have the demand to justify their multiples. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 have had zero moves of 5% or more in that period. The SOX has had 17.

The infrastructure layer is getting marked down because the easy money has been made. That's what happens when stocks that were up 100% in six months face a reality check. The companies building on top of that infrastructure-the cloud operators that are actually billing for it-are getting marked up.

The Scorecard Matters More Than the Headlines

The consensus framing is lazy. "Market punishes AI overspending" treats five companies, $724 billion in combined capex, and a complex earnings cycle as a single verdict on artificial intelligence.

The actual verdict is much more specific: the market is pricing revenue legibility. Companies that can trace a line from capex to externally metered, accelerating cloud revenue get rewarded. Companies that cannot-regardless of how strong their core business is-get punished until they can.

Apple is the most interesting case. It spent very little on AI infrastructure, opting instead to pay Google to power its AI services. It got punished not for AI spending but for weak guidance-9% to 11% revenue growth versus 12% expected-driven by a services miss and a China revenue shortfall. CEO Tim Cook warned that Mac and iPad prices will increase due to a global memory-chip crunch. Apple's AI risk profile is different in kind: it's a consumer hardware company caught between high capex-driven supply costs and a lagging AI monetization strategy.

What would change this thesis? If Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud all decelerate simultaneously in the next quarter, the scarcity argument weakens. If cloud growth slows below 20% across the board, the capex-to-revenue conversion ratio starts to look unattractive at these spending levels. Until then, the data points to the opposite of an AI winter.

The AI buildout is not over. It's just entering the phase where you have to prove you're earning your way.

The best infrastructure plays are the ones where the receipts are already in.

The sky is the limit for the companies that can show the math works.
