Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is aggressively recruiting top AI talent for his new superintelligence lab, offering lucrative packages to secure promising individuals. According to the Wall Street Journal, Zuckerberg personally oversees this recruitment process, using a curated document known as “The List” to target the industry’s brightest minds [1].

The recruits on “The List” typically hold PhDs from elite institutions such as UC Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. These individuals have experience at leading AI labs like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. They are usually in their 20s and 30s and are known for their expertise in calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory [1].

Zuckerberg is personally involved in the recruitment process, strategizing with two Meta executives in a group chat dubbed “Recruiting Party” to discuss hundreds of candidates and outreach methods. The AI community is tight-knit, with researchers forming Slack and Discord groups to share and discuss job offers, often leveraging competing offers to boost their value [1].

Meta has targeted dozens of OpenAI researchers, intensifying the Silicon Valley talent race. Leading Zuckerberg’s superintelligence team is 28-year-old Alexandr Wang, a New Mexico native and son of Chinese immigrant physicists. Meta recently invested $14 billion in Wang’s company, Scale AI, making him one of the most expensive hires in history [1].

In response, OpenAI has revamped its compensation structure and issued an open letter urging staff to resist Meta's offers. The company also shut down for almost a week. OpenAI's ex-CTO Mira Murati has stated that Zuckerberg has offered multi-million-dollar packages to engineers but none have accepted so far [1].
