Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a substantial reduction in Marine Atlantic ferry rates by half for travel between Newfoundland and the mainland. The Crown corporation will receive increased funding, and Ottawa has also frozen commercial freight rates on the route. The fare reduction is expected to save hundreds of dollars for families traveling with vehicles, with a family of four saving between $300 and $400 per crossing.

Carney made the announcement on Monday, highlighting the government's commitment to regional connectivity and affordability. The ferry services are critical transit corridors that link remote regions and support tourism and trade across Atlantic Canada and Eastern Quebec. The reduced fares aim to make travel more accessible and affordable for both individuals and businesses.

Marine Atlantic spokesperson Darrell Mercer noted that the fare reduction will result in significant savings for families. A family of four traveling with a regular-sized vehicle will save between $300 and $400 per crossing through Argentia and between $100 and $200 through Port aux Basques. The ferry service is experiencing a spike in tourism this summer, with summer bookings increasing by 9,000 compared to last year.

For travelers with bookings past August 1, refunds will be issued. The ferry service will work through approximately 110,000 passengers with bookings in its system to ensure refunds are processed.

The government's decision to reduce ferry fares and increase funding for Marine Atlantic underscores its commitment to supporting the regional economy. By making travel more affordable, the government aims to increase mobility and build a stronger Atlantic Canada.
