MapleStory N Launches May 15, Excludes 50 Countries
MapleStory N, the crypto spinoff of the popular MMORPG MapleStory, is set to launch on May 15. Players in select countries will have the opportunity to pre-download the game starting from May 8. The new game will feature a 2D, sidescrolling gameplay style similar to the original MapleStory, and it is part of the MapleStory universe (MSU), which includes plans for a mobile game version, MapleStory N SDK, and Project ModN, a blockchain game sandbox for developers.
MapleStory N utilizes its own Avalanche L1 subnet to facilitate player-to-player game item trading without an in-game shop. Players will be able to buy, sell, and create in-game items. The game includes a built-in anticheat feature and leverages AvaCloud’s security infrastructure. It has already been tested with millions of onchain activities across approximately 972,000 registered wallets, with an estimated 506,000 total users during the prelaunch period.
The original MapleStory game, developed by Nexon, features a pixelated “chibi” anime aesthetic. Players can choose from various character classes such as warrior, magician, bowman, thief, or pirate. The game offers a range of activities, including joining guilds, auctioning items, enhancing items, leveling up, navigating dungeons, battling monsters and bosses, and selecting new skills.
However, MapleStory N will not be available in the US, most of Europe, or countries like Japan and South Korea. The restricted countries list includes over 50 countries, which is approximately one-quarter of the world's countries. Notably, countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, Australia, South Africa, India, and some countries in Southeast Asia are not on the restricted list. This restriction could significantly impact the game's reach, as it excludes some of the largest gaming markets globally, including the top 7 largest gaming markets by revenue. The game will only be available in 2 of the top 10 markets by revenue, Mexico and Canada.
Players may attempt to use VPNs to bypass these restrictions, but some platforms are capable of identifying and blocking VPN use. The terms of MSU state that these countries are barred from playing the game due to the status of crypto sanctions or regulations in each country. However, the US has shown a favorable stance toward cryptocurrencies under the Trump administration, and the SEC has dismissed several prior investigations into crypto platforms. If MSU does not change its terms, MapleStory N may not reach the audience it could otherwise attract, which is unfortunate given the game's promising features.
