Scott, a convicted driver with a deplorable traffic history, has been sentenced to five years' jail for fatally striking an elderly man with his car. Scott claimed he was daydreaming and not watching his speed, but was later found to have concocted a false narrative to cover his tracks. The victim, a respected teacher and veteran, was crossing the road with the green pedestrian signal when he was hit. Scott's family has expressed their shock and grief over the loss.
Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey A. Wagner sentenced Danny Romero, 30, to 32 years in prison for his role in a fatal crash involving a Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus on April 20, 2024. Romero admitted to driving a stolen vehicle into the bus, killing one of his passengers, Michael Captain, 31. The incident occurred at 35th and Wisconsin, where Romero's SUV ran red lights and collided with the bus.Romero pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide, two counts of second-degree reckless injury, and homicide by vehicle while using a controlled substance. At the sentencing, Romero's lawyer highlighted his challenges with drug addiction and mental health, while the prosecuting attorney, Grant Huebner, emphasized Romero's extensive criminal history, including several retail thefts.
Romero's family and friends expressed remorse and regret for the loss of Captain, who was described as strong-willed and big-hearted by his mother, Jennifer Captain-Doppke. Romero's sentence includes 32 consecutive years of initial confinement, followed by 27 years under extended supervision. He was also ordered to pay over $94,000 in restitution to a crime victim compensation fund and two individual victims.
The incident underscores the growing concern over reckless driving in Milwaukee, with 31 deaths reported in motor vehicle crashes in 2025 as of July 6, according to the Wisconsin Transportation Department. Statewide, there have been 254 traffic deaths this year. Huebner described reckless driving as an endemic problem in Milwaukee, noting that it has been a persistent issue in the city for years.
