Ellison’s perspective aligns with those who believe that mastering skills that AI cannot replicate is a wise move for young workers.
Ellison’s advice to young people is to stay close to the customers and the cash register, as these roles will always provide employment opportunities for growth. He believes that focusing on developing uniquely human skills, such as empathy, creativity, and problem-solving, is more valuable than chasing after corporate positions that may become less relevant in an AI-driven future. This advice is particularly relevant for recent graduates who are facing slowed hiring and an uncertain job market.
Ellison’s remarks also highlight the growing demand for skilled trade workers. Industries such as construction, utilities, and oil, gas, and mining are among the fastest-growing for new graduates. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that demand for plumbers, roofers, and electricians will grow over the next decade at rates faster than the national average. This trend is driven by an aging workforce and the need for critical trade skills, which could see hiring for these roles increase significantly in the coming years.
Ellison’s message serves as a reminder that while AI is transforming the workforce, it is not a panacea for all challenges. Human expertise remains invaluable, and young workers should focus on developing skills that AI cannot replicate. By staying close to customers and mastering the skills that AI lacks, Generation Z workers can secure employment opportunities and grow in their careers.
