Loop Industries has launched Twist, a high-performance polyester resin brand for textile and apparel customers, made entirely from textile waste and completely traceable from feedstock to final product. Twist has a low environmental footprint and reduces CO₂ emissions. It is produced using Loop's patented depolymerization technology and is chemically identical to virgin polyester. The production of Twist saves up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and reduces GHG emissions by up to 81%. Twist is set to transform textile recycling with complete traceability and will be expanded from Loop's Terrebonne facility and produced at the Infinite Loop India facility.
Loop Industries (Nasdaq:LOOP) has announced the launch of Twist™, a high-performance polyester resin brand made entirely from textile waste. The innovative product is designed for high-performance textile and apparel applications and utilizes Loop's patented depolymerization technology to break down polyester textile waste into base monomers. These monomers are then purified and repolymerized to create Twist™ resin, which is chemically identical to virgin polyester.
Twist™ offers significant environmental benefits, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 81% compared to fossil fuel-based resin. This equates to potential annual savings of up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions [1]. The resin is set to transform textile recycling by providing a complete traceability system using embedded chemical tracers, allowing finished products to be tracked back to their original waste textile inputs.
The strategic manufacturing location of Twist™ in India positions Loop Industries well to serve global textile markets, where polyester remains the dominant fiber, accounting for 52% of global fiber production. The company aims to transform textile waste into a valuable resource while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of one of the world's most widely used synthetic materials.
Loop Industries' Chief Revenue Officer, Giovanni Catino, commented, "Twist™ represents a major step forward in closing the loop for textiles. It supports the textile industry's shift toward a circular model and provides a unique product offering which meets the needs of our customers as we secure agreements for the offtake of our India JV."
Twist™ is set to be produced at Loop's Terrebonne facility and the upcoming Infinite Loop™ India facility, with plans to expand production to meet growing demand. The resin's ability to be made entirely from textile waste while achieving virgin-quality performance addresses a critical gap in the textile circular economy. Most current textile recycling systems degrade fiber quality or rely on PET bottles as feedstock rather than creating true textile-to-textile loops.
The technology employs chemical depolymerization to break down polyester waste into its base monomers (DMT and MEG), effectively removing all contaminants, dyes, and blended materials - technical hurdles that have historically limited textile recycling effectiveness. This process produces a chemically identical substitute for virgin polyester, maintaining the high performance standards required for fashion, sportswear, and home textile applications.
The embedded chemical traceability system in Twist™ allows verification of recycled content throughout the supply chain, addressing the significant verification challenges plaguing textile recycling claims. This transparency is crucial as regulatory requirements and brand sustainability commitments increasingly demand authenticated recycled materials.
With full traceability from waste input to finished product, Twist™ empowers brands to confidently meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for transparency and circularity. The production of Twist™ saves up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 81% when compared to fossil fuel-based resin [2].
This combination of performance, price, traceability, and sustainability positions Twist™ as a key material for brands seeking to lead on circularity and meet evolving sustainability targets. The launch of Twist™ represents a significant advancement in textile recycling technology, transforming textile waste into a valuable resource while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of one of the world's most widely used synthetic materials.
