Loop Industries has launched Twist™, a circular polyester resin made entirely from textile waste. Twist™ reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 81% and saves up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The manufacturing will occur at Loop's Terrebonne facility and the forthcoming Infinite Loop™ India facility. Twist™ has complete traceability and is chemically identical to virgin polyester, making it a significant leap in the textile recycling domain.
Loop Industries (Nasdaq:LOOP) has announced the launch of Twist™, a groundbreaking circular polyester resin produced entirely from textile waste. This innovative product represents a significant advancement in textile recycling technology, offering substantial environmental benefits and addressing a critical gap in the textile circular economy.
Twist™ is manufactured using Loop's patented depolymerization technology, which breaks down polyester textile waste into base monomers (DMT and MEG). These monomers are then purified and repolymerized to create a resin chemically identical to virgin polyester. This process removes all contaminants, dyes, and blended materials, ensuring high performance for textile and apparel applications. The resin's ability to achieve virgin-quality performance is a notable achievement, as most current textile recycling systems degrade fiber quality or rely on PET bottles as feedstock.
One of the key features of Twist™ is its complete traceability system, which uses embedded chemical tracers to track finished products back to their original waste textile inputs. This feature is crucial as regulatory requirements and brand sustainability commitments increasingly demand authenticated recycled materials. The transparency provided by Twist™ addresses the significant verification challenges plaguing textile recycling claims.
The environmental impact of Twist™ is substantial. The product reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 81% compared to fossil fuel-based resin, potentially saving up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This has been independently validated by Franklin Associates, a division of ERG, who completed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study of Loop's technology [1].
Manufacturing of Twist™ will occur at Loop's Terrebonne facility and the forthcoming Infinite Loop™ India facility. The strategic location of these facilities positions the company well to serve global textile markets, where polyester remains the dominant fiber (52% of global fiber production). The Infinite Loop™ India facility alone has the potential to save up to 418,600 tonnes of CO₂ annually compared to virgin PET [1].
Twist™ is designed to be fully compatible with existing spinning and manufacturing infrastructure, ensuring high purity, color, and dyability consistency. This compatibility, combined with the product's significant environmental benefits, positions Twist™ as a key material for brands seeking to lead on circularity and meet evolving sustainability targets.
"Twist™ represents a major step forward in closing the loop for textiles," said Giovanni Catino, Chief Revenue Officer of Loop Industries. "It supports the textile industry's shift toward a circular model and provides a unique product offering which meets the needs of Loop's customers as we secure agreements for the offtake of our India JV" [1].
