Surging power demand from data centers has spurred interest in long duration energy storage (LDES) technologies to provide reliable clean power supplies day and night. LDES can bank and dispatch power for more than eight hours, supplementing intermittent renewables and reducing backup fossil fuel use. Despite federal policy uncertainty, contracts for multi-day battery projects are emerging, such as Xcel Energy's deal with Google. However, shorter-duration lithium-ion batteries are expected to dominate in the short term due to supply chain constraints and federal restrictions.
