The global demand for lithium, a critical component in rechargeable batteries, is surging as the world embraces electric vehicles and energy storage solutions. Traditionally, lithium has been extracted from hard-rock ores and continental brines, but a new frontier is emerging: oilfield brines. This article explores the potential of extracting lithium from Bakken oilfield brine, as demonstrated by Volt Lithium and Wellspring Hydro's field study agreement backed by a grant from the State of North Dakota.

The Bakken formation in North Dakota generates approximately 2.0 million barrels of lithium-infused oilfield brine daily, representing the second largest producer of brine in the U.S. This abundance and accessibility make Bakken brine a promising alternative to traditional lithium sources, which are geographically concentrated in specific regions like the Lithium Triangle and China.

Volt Lithium's proprietary direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology offers significant environmental benefits and potential cost savings compared to traditional methods. DLE reduces the need for open-air evaporation ponds, which consume vast amounts of water and contribute to environmental degradation. Additionally, DLE processes can be tailored to specific brine compositions, allowing for efficient lithium recovery from diverse sources, including oilfield brines.

Extracting lithium from oilfield brines eliminates the need for mining hard-rock ores, which can cause significant environmental damage. Furthermore, the Bakken formation generates a substantial and readily available resource, enabling the U.S. to enhance its security of critical minerals, support the energy and manufacturing sectors, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Volt Lithium and Wellspring Hydro to extract lithium from Bakken oilfield brine holds great promise for the energy transition. By harnessing this resource, the U.S. can reduce its reliance on traditional lithium sources, minimize environmental impact, and support the growth of the clean energy sector. As the global demand for lithium continues to rise, innovative solutions like DLE technology will play a crucial role in meeting this demand while promoting sustainability and energy independence.
