LG Energy Solution, a Korean battery manufacturer, has collaborated with KAIST to develop a lithium metal battery that can charge in 12 minutes. The new battery technology aims to improve the charging speed of electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems (ESS). The company is a leading manufacturer of batteries for EVs, ESS, and small applications.

LG Energy Solution, a leading Korean battery manufacturer, has secured a significant contract with Mercedes-Benz AG to supply electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The deal, valued at approximately 15 trillion won ($10.8 billion), is one of the largest orders in LG Energy's history [1].

The contract involves two separate agreements: one for 32 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of batteries to be delivered to Mercedes-Benz AG in Europe from August 1, 2028, to the end of 2035, and another for 75 GWh to be supplied to Mercedes-Benz's affiliates in the US from July 30, 2029, to the end of 2037 [1]. These batteries will be produced at LG's dedicated cylindrical battery plant under construction in Arizona, which is expected to commence mass production next year [1].

The deal highlights LG Energy's growing importance as a strategic supplier to Mercedes-Benz and underscores the German automaker's commitment to diversifying its supply chain and securing capacity in both Europe and the US. This move aligns with Mercedes-Benz's ambition to build new supply chains for manufacturing EVs and reduce reliance on China [1].

LG Energy's success in securing this contract can be attributed to its technological edge over Chinese rivals such as Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) and Farasis Energy Co. [1]. The company's 46 series cylindrical batteries, which measure 46 millimeters in diameter, have been recognized for their competitive advantages [1].

In addition to this major order, LG Energy has already secured more than 150 GWh of battery contracts for the 46 series with Mercedes-Benz, further solidifying its position as a key player in the EV battery market [1]. The company is also building battery plants in the US and Europe for customers including Tesla Inc. and General Motors Co., aiming to reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers [1].
