U.S. Launches Health Tech Initiative with Over 60 Corporate Supporters

The U.S. government, led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the White House, has launched a major initiative to modernize the digital health ecosystem. The effort, announced at a July 31 event titled “Make Health Tech Great Again,” aims to empower patients with tools to better manage their health while enabling seamless data sharing between providers, insurers, and software platforms. Over 60 companies, including Amazon, Apple, Google, and OpenAI, have pledged support for the initiative, which is expected to transform the U.S. healthcare landscape by early 2026 [1].

The core of the initiative is the CMS Interoperability Framework, which sets voluntary technical and security standards for health networks, EHRs, and apps to become part of the CMS-Aligned Networks. These networks must meet criteria such as FHIR API support, audit logs, and modern identity protocols. Twenty-one health information networks have already committed to aligning with these standards [2]. Eleven health systems and providers have pledged to support patients in using digital tools, while seven EHR vendors have committed to eliminating paper forms in favor of digital exchanges [2].

Among the new tools to be introduced are conversational AI assistants for symptom checks and care navigation, applications for chronic disease management, and digital check-in systems using QR codes and smart health cards. These tools will leverage secure digital credentials to access medical records from CMS-Aligned Networks [2]. CMS also plans to accelerate the availability of Blue Button data and introduce digital insurance cards later this year, improving transparency and accessibility for patients and third-party apps [1].

To support these goals, CMS is also implementing a FHIR-based National Provider Directory and enhancing digital identity features on Medicare.gov. These tools will provide secure, seamless access to provider and claims data, streamlining administrative processes for both patients and healthcare professionals [1].

Industry leaders have welcomed the initiative. Mainul Mondal, CEO of Ellipsis Health, emphasized the importance of unifying organizations under patient-first principles, calling the launch a significant step in integrating artificial intelligence into healthcare delivery [1]. Datavant and Sharecare, among other participating companies, have highlighted the potential for improved decision-making and care quality through the initiative [3][4].

The White House and CMS view the project as a strategic shift in U.S. health policy, emphasizing digital innovation, security, and patient empowerment.
