Lakeland Industries (LAKE) shares fell 18.83% in intraday trading Thursday after the protective-apparel manufacturer reported a second-quarter earnings miss and a $3.2 million goodwill impairment charge.

Here is what happened, why investors reacted, and what comes next.

What Did The Company Report?

Lakeland reported fiscal Q2 FY2027 results on September 9, 2026, for the quarter ended July 31. Reported EPS came in at -$0.50, missing the consensus forecast of $0.015. The company recorded a net loss of $4.9 million, a sharp reversal from the $0.8 million net income posted a year earlier.

The quarterly loss was driven by a $3.2 million non-cash goodwill impairment charge related to LHD Group Deutschland GmbH, a subsidiary in the company's industrial segment. Excluding the impairment, the underlying loss was significantly narrower.

Revenue was $50.1 million, down 4.5% year over year. The decline includes the effect of product lines divested in March 2026. On a comparable basis, excluding $3.7 million of prior-year sales from those divested lines, revenue actually grew 2.8%. Sequentially, sales rose 5.7% from Q1.

Gross margin improved to 37.0%, up 110 basis points from 35.9% a year ago and up from 31.4% in the prior quarter. Adjusted EBITDA excluding FX more than doubled sequentially to $2.7 million from $1.1 million, though it remained well below the $5.1 million reported in the prior-year quarter.

Why Did Investors React?

The earnings miss was the immediate trigger. An EPS result of -$0.50 versus a $0.015 consensus represents a wide gap that sent the stock lower. For a small-cap company, the difference between a small profit and a loss of this magnitude is material — the company delivered roughly 33 cents per share below expectations.

The goodwill impairment, while non-cash, signals that management no longer believes the carrying value of the German subsidiary is recoverable. That kind of write-down often raises questions about the broader health of the acquired business and whether additional impairments may follow.

Still, the underlying operational picture was more mixed than the headline numbers suggest. The fire business, which LakelandLAKE-- has identified as the center of its growth strategy, now accounts for 52% of total revenue — up from 49% in the prior quarter and prior year. Fire revenue reached $26.1 million, up 12% sequentially and 2% year over year. Within fire, helmet sales grew 41%, hood sales rose 66%, and fire services revenue surged 78%. The company also secured tender and contract awards across nine countries, including a notification of intended award under the U.K. National Fire Chiefs Council framework, a seven-year program with total potential value of up to £220 million across all suppliers.

CEO Jim Jenkins said the company is taking a "much more deliberate approach to the portfolio," divesting businesses where returns have not met expectations and concentrating resources behind the fire platform. CFO Calvin Swinea highlighted that operating cash flow for the first half of fiscal 2027 was $5.4 million, a $15.1 million improvement year over year, and management anticipates sequential revenue growth in Q3 and Q4.

What Comes Next?

Investors will watch whether the sequential momentum in the fire business continues. Management expects fire demand, tender awards, and recovering industrial markets to support revenue growth in the second half of fiscal 2027.

The key question is whether the improved gross margin, stronger cash flow, and fire-led mix shift can offset the headwinds from divested product lines and the goodwill write-down. The company ended the quarter with $17.9 million in cash and lower debt, which provides some runway as it simplifies the portfolio.

Trading volume was significantly elevated relative to recent activity. The regular session on Thursday will show whether selling pressure continues or whether some investors view the decline as an overreaction to a non-cash charge.
