Lagos Powers Ahead: Africa's First Electric Boat Race Ignites Global Ambitions

Lagos State is set to host the inaugural E1 Series electric boat racing championship in October 2025, marking Africa’s first event of its kind and showcasing the city’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement. The event, scheduled for October 4 and 5, is the result of a competitive bidding process in which Lagos secured the hosting rights from among globally recognized cities such as Monaco, Venice, and Jeddah. Rodi Basso, CEO of the E1 Series, emphasized the significance of the achievement, noting Lagos' capacity to host a global sporting event that aligns with environmental innovation and economic development. “The ocean is one of nature’s most challenging environments, yet the boating industry is changing. To overcome existing challenges, organisations must redesign and innovate in ways unseen before,” he stated. The E1 Series is designed to showcase the potential for sustainable maritime transport through alternative power solutions and innovative boat architecture.

The Lagos State Government has positioned the event as a key component of its broader economic and environmental strategy, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration emphasizing global climate action and marine transport innovation. The championship is expected to attract over 250 international sports personalities, with nine teams—ranging from high-profile celebrity-backed squads like those led by Didier Drogba and Will Smith—set to compete in Victoria Island. The race is part of the Governor’s THEMES+ development agenda, a framework aimed at transforming the state through tourism, economic growth, and international engagement. According to Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Sam Egube, the event will elevate Lagos' global standing by highlighting its cultural vibrancy and economic potential. “For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity. We are hosting an event that merges speed, sustainability, and innovation. It signals economic opportunity, tourism growth, and global prestige,” he remarked.

The E1 Series aligns with Lagos’ broader efforts in marine transportation modernization. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, previewed the upcoming Omi Eko Project, a development that will deploy 72 electric boats to address traffic congestion and promote alternative water transport. This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and enhance mobility within the city. Lagos State’s Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, encouraged local stakeholders—including artisans, traders, and the hospitality industry—to capitalize on the economic opportunities generated by the event. With an influx of international visitors expected, the championship presents a unique opportunity to showcase Lagos’ cultural heritage and economic dynamism. The event is anticipated to contribute to the state’s GDP and further Nigeria’s profile as a modern, forward-thinking nation.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed strong support for the initiative, having previously highlighted the innovation and bold ideas showcased at an E1 event in Monaco. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that hosting the championship reinforces Lagos’ readiness to participate in global clean energy and sustainable development conversations. The administration has also underscored the event’s role in promoting Lagos as a hub for investment and tourism, aligning with global sporting and entertainment trends. Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, affirmed the city’s capability to host world-class events that generate revenue and contribute to national economic growth.

The E1 Lagos GP is expected to bring together global attention on the city’s transformation, combining sport, sustainability, and culture in a unique format. The event underscores the growing interest in electric marine technology and highlights the potential for electric boats to reshape water-based transport and recreation. As Lagos prepares for the race, it joins an elite group of host cities that are redefining global sporting and environmental benchmarks.
