Kumaraswamy Backs Bengaluru Tunnel Roads Project, Seeks Central Aid

The tunnel roads project, championed by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar, has faced stiff opposition but now has unexpected support from the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel. Kumaraswamy termed the project the "backbone of Bengaluru’s future transport infrastructure," addressing current bottlenecks, improving connectivity, and enabling long-term sustainable growth [1].
The project, which will connect Hebbal to Silk Board, will be implemented in two packages. Package 1, covering 8.748 km from Hebbal's Esteem Mall Junction to Seshadri Road, and Package 2, covering the same distance from Seshadri Road to Silk Board Junction, will use 8 Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) [2]. The total length of the twin tunnel road is 33.49 km, with a projected completion time of 38 months.
The project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Bengaluru. The toll for vehicles using the one-way tunnel road is set at ₹19 per km, with the contractor having the right to collect tolls for 30 years post-construction [2]. The BBMP, which is implementing the project, is awaiting approval from the Finance Department before inviting tenders.
In addition to the tunnel roads project, Kumaraswamy also urged the Centre to support the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project. The PRR aims to decongest Bengaluru’s core areas and improve overall traffic management.
