A massive earthquake in Russia's Far East may have triggered the eruption of the Krasheninnikov Volcano, its first in 600 years. The volcano's last lava effusion occurred in 1463, and no eruption has been known since. The eruption has been assigned an orange aviation code, indicating a heightened risk to aircraft. An ash plume has risen to 6,000 meters and drifted eastward toward the Pacific Ocean.
