(KHC) saw a trading volume of $0.53 billion, ranking 195th among stocks on the day. Following the announcement of its corporate split, the stock fell nearly 7%, reflecting investor concerns over the company’s strategic overhaul. Kraft plans to divide into two publicly traded entities by late 2026, separating its high-growth sauces and condiments portfolio—encompassing brands like Heinz, Philadelphia, and Kraft Mac & Cheese—from slower-moving grocery staples such as Oscar Mayer and Lunchables. The decision follows a decade of financial struggles after the 2015 merger of Kraft Foods and H.J. Heinz. The conglomerate’s attempts to cut costs and streamline operations failed to offset declining consumer demand and intense competition. Shareholders have faced a 60% drop in stock value since the merger’s peak, compounded by $9.3 billion in impairment charges in July 2025. Executives cited operational complexity across 56 product categories as a key barrier to growth, with CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera acknowledging the need to reallocate resources to high-potential areas.
Warren Buffett, who led the original 2015 deal through Berkshire Hathaway, admitted the merger was a “notable misstep,” with the conglomerate’s brands losing value over time. Despite recent product innovations, including plant-based offerings and reduced artificial additives, shifting consumer preferences toward private-label and health-conscious alternatives have eroded market share. The split aims to address these challenges by allowing each new entity to focus independently on its core strengths.
Analysts remain skeptical about the long-term efficacy of the strategy, given Buffett’s own doubts about the restructuring. While the move may improve operational clarity, the market’s immediate reaction suggests lingering uncertainties about the company’s ability to regain competitive ground in a rapidly evolving food landscape.
