In a rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, the ambitious startup Kimi has taken massive strides in its ongoing challenge against established players like OpenAI. A year after debuting its services, Kimi, spearheaded by founder Yang Zhilin, has introduced significant advancements, signaling a new phase in AI model scaling.

On November 16th, in a recent media forum, Yang highlighted a shift in scaling paradigms, focusing on reinforcement learning to drive AI's growth. This shift underscores the necessity of finding effective scaling methodologies beyond merely expanding model size. The aim is to endow AI with critical thinking capabilities, moving past mere token prediction.

In a notable move, Kimi unveiled its k0-math model, emphasizing enhanced reasoning skills through mathematics-driven scenarios, a strategic initiative aimed at bolstering AI's deep thinking. In various evaluations, k0-math displayed competitive mathematics capabilities, matching OpenAI’s o1 series in several benchmark tests for academic and competition-level assessments.

Despite showing promise, Kimi's journey to rival OpenAI is fraught with challenges. The k0-math inaugural model achieves commendable performance in tests like OMNI-MATH and AIME, scoring up to 90% and 83% of the best results from the o1-mini model. The path to closing this gap remains complex and demanding.

As Kimi translates its k0-math model into market offerings, the company leverages its reinforcement learning in the Kimi Exploration Edition. This version excels in intent search, source analysis, and chain thinking, signifying a robust move towards more sophisticated AI search capabilities. Additionally, The Dark Side aims to extend k0-math's application within educational contexts, from K12 to higher education and competitive settings.

Over the past year, The Dark Side has experienced swift growth, becoming a trailblazing AI unicorn with notable advancements in both technology and market valuation. As of now, the company has secured multiple financing rounds with investments from giants such as Alibaba and Tencent, boasting a valuation exceeding 20 billion RMB.

Kimi's active user base surpassed 36 million in October, continuing its upward trajectory. Analysts observe Kimi’s position as a leading AI application, yet acknowledging the vast scale of its overseas counterparts' user bases, signaling a significant journey ahead.

Yang Zhilin is determined to navigate The Dark Side through the complexities and opportunities of the global AI race, striving towards achieving AGI in a field brimming with potential and skepticism. This endeavor marks only the beginning of a larger battle in the AI domain.
