The Material Management (MM) module in SAP S/4HANA uses a simplified data model with new tables and structures. Key tables include MATDOC (inventory management), MARA (material master data), EKKO (purchasing document header), and PRCD_ELEMENTS (pricing conditions). The module aims to reduce data redundancy and uses Core Data Services (CDS) views for data access and reporting. Compatibility views are provided to map old table structures to new ones.

The Material Management (MM) module in SAP S/4HANA has revolutionized inventory management by adopting a simplified data model [1]. This new approach, which includes key tables like MATDOC (inventory management), MARA (material master data), EKKO (purchasing document header), and PRCD_ELEMENTS (pricing conditions), aims to reduce data redundancy and improve performance.

Before SAP S/4HANA, the inventory management data model in SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) was fraught with redundant information and performance issues due to the extensive use of hybrid, aggregate, and history tables [1]. This led to numerous challenges, including slow stock reporting and database locks caused by UPDATE operations and business processes.

To address these challenges, SAP S/4HANA introduced a new simplified data model (NSDM) that calculated stock data from material document information stored in a single table managed using INSERT operations only [1]. This innovative approach eliminated redundancy, improved performance, and eliminated lock issues.

However, ensuring compatibility for consumers in higher layers, partners, and customer solutions was a significant challenge. To tackle this, SAP implemented the use of proxy objects in the form of Core Data Services (CDS) views [1]. These CDS views were employed to calculate stock figures on the fly and join the master data results contained in the hybrid tables, ensuring seamless compatibility.

In conclusion, SAP S/4HANA's Material Management (MM) module and its new simplified data model have significantly improved inventory management by reducing data redundancy, enhancing performance, and ensuring compatibility for various solutions.
