Kenya's Mombassa-Nairobi rail link has received 20 new passenger trains from China's CRRC, increasing the line's fleet to over 60 trains. The delivery is part of a 2023 contract, enhancing the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), built under China's "Belt and Road Initiative." The trains include various classes and are equipped for maintenance. The connection, previously serviced by a slow narrow gauge line, was established in 2017 and is now seen as a significant upgrade for Kenya's infrastructure.

The Mombasa-Nairobi rail link in Kenya has received a significant boost with the delivery of 20 new passenger trains from China's CRRC [1]. This enhancement to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) fleet increases the number of trains to over 60, marking a substantial improvement to the country's infrastructure [2].

The new trains, part of a 2023 contract, include various classes, such as first-class, second-class, dining, power generation, and business-class cars [1]. These additions not only enhance the passenger experience but also ensure the operational efficiency of the line.

The connection between Mombasa and Nairobi was previously serviced by a slow and narrow gauge line, which was established in 2017 [2]. However, this upgrade, implemented under China's "Belt and Road Initiative," significantly enhances the interconnectivity and transportation capacity between Kenya and other East African countries [1].

The Mombasa-Nairobi line plays a vital role in the region's economic development by improving logistics and transportation, stimulating trade growth, and attracting investment [2]. Since its launch in 2017, CRRC has delivered 41 passenger trains and opened the first overseas 4S shop for providing 24/7 passenger train operation and maintenance services in Kenya [1].
