Kenya’s January 2026 bond switch auction, which extended domestic debt repayments to 2037, was initially reported with conflicting figures, prompting clarification from official sources. The auction exchanged holdings of the August 2026 bond (FXD1/2016/010) for the longer-dated FXD1/2022/015, maturing April 6, 2037. While some reports cited an accepted amount of Ksh25.17 billion against an offered Ksh20 billion, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) confirmed the transaction adhered to standard liability-management protocols. The Treasury accepted Ksh25.17 billion in bids, exceeding the initial offer, with a performance rate of 132.46% and a weighted average yield of 13.1669%. This outcome reflects strong investor demand, driven by the bond's eligibility for statutory liquidity requirements and CBK rediscounting facilities.

The discrepancy in reporting likely stemmed from confusion between the offered amount and the accepted volume, which included voluntary rollovers by existing bondholders. The operation deferred Ksh25.17 billion in near-term redemptions, aligning with Kenya’s strategy to lengthen debt maturities and reduce refinancing risks. Since 2020, similar bond switches have rolled over over Ksh90 billion in domestic debt, extending average Treasury bond maturities to 7.49 years by mid-2025.

The CBK emphasized that the auction did not inject new liquidity but redistributed existing obligations into longer-term instruments. Investors exchanged part or all of their holdings in the maturing bond, converting short-term redemptions into extended coupon streams. The corrected figures underscore the Treasury’s reliance on liability-management tools to stabilize debt servicing amid elevated borrowing costs.
