KBW Lifts HUT Target to $157-But Today's Earnings Must Confirm the AI Hype or Watchouts Begin

KBW's $157 HUT Target Depends on a Valuation Shift
KBW maintained its positive view on Hut 8HUT-- and raised its target to $157 from $138. Hut 8 is scheduled to report before the market opens, so this earnings release matters as a check on whether the market is ready to keep supporting the company's shift from a crypto-native label to an AI infrastructure story.
Hut 8 now positions itself as an energy infrastructure platform that combines power, digital infrastructure, and compute for AI, high-performance computing, and ASIC workloads. If investors accept that repositioning, HUT could command a different valuation profile than a Bitcoin-linked speculation. The bear case, though, is straightforward: earlier AI pivot stories in this space often struggled to translate narrative into durable cash flow.
Q2 gave investors a clearer look at whether Hut 8's infrastructure buildout is turning into operating leverage. The company reported 81% year-over-year revenue growth, while gross margin expanded to approximately 64%. Adjusted EBITDA excluding digital-asset mark-to-market movements also improved to $10.4 million from $4.2 million. That suggests the business is doing more than adding capacity; the model is starting to show better margins as higher-value infrastructure and compute activity scales.
Contracted demand is the key catalyst
The more important question is whether power access is translating into real customer commitment. Q2 pointed to yes: Hut 8 reported about 949 MW of contracted AI data-center capacity and roughly $26.6 billion of expected base-term lease value. Beacon Point Building Two added 352 MW, and the campus commercialized its 1 GW of utility capacity.
Project financing supports the buildout story
Hut 8 also closed $7.5 billion of investment-grade, non-recourse project financing for River Bend and Beacon Point. Management said Beacon Point received better pricing terms and a longer amortization profile than River Bend. That matters because it helps separate project-level funding from parent-company stress. Combined with a qualified development pipeline of about 8.7 GW across 11 sites, the financing deal suggests the development model may be repeatable rather than dependent on a single breakthrough.
The Bear Case Still Turns on Execution and Messaging
The prior quarter already showed real operating momentum, with Q2 revenue rose 81% year over year and adjusted EBITDA excluding digital-asset mark-to-market movements increasing to $10.4 million. But that does not finalize the AI rerating. If execution slips, HUT can still get remapped back to crypto-beta pricing.
P&L noise can still cloud the story
Hut 8 still posted a $177.1 million GAAP net loss, mostly driven by a $138 million non-cash digital-asset loss. As long as that volatility remains visible in reported results, skeptics will have a simple argument: HUT still looks more like a crypto-adjacent company than a clean infrastructure compounder.
What Today's Earnings Need to Confirm
KBW's buy rating and $157 target can be reasonable on paper and still prove too early if the company fails to strengthen the operating case in real time.
Signals that would support the bullish case
- Management turns last quarter's progress into forward visibility, not just a recap of strong Q2 operating performance.
- The company reinforces execution against contracted AI data-center capacity and keeps project financing framed as repeatable.
- It ties the triple-net, take-or-pay contracted lease revenue story to the broader commercialization roadmap and the Anthropic and Fluidstack partnership without making those items read like one-off headlines.
Signals that would weaken it
- Digital-asset volatility still dominates the P&L discussion.
- Guidance remains vague on how the backlog converts into revenue and how the build is funded.
- The call leans on power access as the full moat instead of explaining what comes after customers are plugged in.
If today's before-the-market release and 8:30 a.m. ET call close that conviction gap, KBW's target has a clearer operating basis. If not, the stock may still need more proof before the market fully embraces the AI infrastructure re-rating.
