John Oliver, the comedian and host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” has a notable affinity for minor league baseball, which was evident in the debut of the Erie Moon Mammoths. The team made their debut on Saturday night in front of a record crowd of 7,070 at UPMC Park. Oliver, who had previously spotlighted Minor League Baseball promotions and alternate nicknames during his show, invited teams to submit proposals for a rebranding opportunity. The Erie SeaWolves, a Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, were selected as the winner from 47 teams that submitted pitches.
Erie president Greg Coleman sent a list of 11 reasons why the SeaWolves were the perfect candidate for rebranding, including the fact that they play baseball nowhere near the sea. Oliver and his staff conducted six weeks of research before unveiling the Moon Mammoths on June 29. The new identity included a mascot named Fuzz, a purple woolly mammoth wearing a space helmet. The rebranding process, which usually takes 16 months, was completed in less than three months, a minor miracle in the world of sports branding.
The Moon Mammoths name was inspired by George Moon, who found the bone of a prehistoric mammoth while scuba diving in 1991. The remains are housed at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Moon has become a regional celebrity since the rebranding was announced and was present at the game, catching the ceremonial first pitch from Oliver. The rebranding has significantly boosted the team's online sales, equivalent to four years’ worth in just three weeks. The team store, located in left field, had a line of people stretching out to near home plate in the concourse area.
Fans like Karyn Drombosky and Sean Mizerski, who drove from Pittsburgh and were wearing homemade tusks, expressed their excitement about the rebranding. They are big baseball fans and regular viewers of John Oliver's show. Oliver's involvement extended beyond the first pitch; he also served as a batboy during one inning and led the crowd in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the seventh inning stretch. The cap and jersey that Oliver wore for the first pitch are set to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Despite trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Moon Mammoths got within one run on Kevin McGonigle’s two-run double. However, Chesapeake’s Yaqui Rivera struck out Josue Briceño with the bases loaded to end the game. Erie manager Andrew Graham praised the atmosphere and smooth operation of the event, noting that such a successful night is rare in minor league baseball. The Moon Mammoths are scheduled to play again on Aug. 19, as well as Sept. 12 and 13, with at least four games planned for next season.
Oliver's love for minor league baseball is evident in his comments, highlighting the special eccentricity of the sport. He appreciates the willingness of minor league teams to try anything, which aligns with the show's ethos. The rebranding of the Erie SeaWolves to the Moon Mammoths has not only brought a record crowd but also renewed interest and excitement in the team, proving that sometimes, taking a risk can lead to unexpected success.
