Japan April exports to U.S. decline by 1.8% YoY; exports to EU drop by 5.2% YoY; exports to China down 0.6% YoY

Japan's top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, recently reiterated the country's stance on US tariffs during bilateral trade talks. Despite ongoing negotiations, Tokyo maintains its demand for the elimination of US tariffs, including those on automobiles, car parts, steel, and aluminum. Akazawa emphasized that Japan will not rush into a deal if it risks hurting the country's interests [1].

Meanwhile, Japan's exports to the United States, European Union, and China saw a decline in April 2025 compared to the same period last year. Exports to the US dropped by 1.8% year-over-year (YoY), while exports to the EU decreased by 5.2% YoY. Exports to China also fell by 0.6% YoY [2].

These trade figures underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Japan in its negotiations with the US and other major trading partners. The decline in exports suggests a potential impact on Japan's economic growth, highlighting the need for a favorable trade agreement.
