Apple has released the public beta 2 for iOS and iPadOS 26.1, introducing several new features aimed at improving user experience. The update includes a 'Slide to stop' gesture for alarms and timers, the return of the Slide Over multitasking feature on the iPad, and various design updates. Additionally, the update offers enhanced audio controls for external microphones and includes a 3D model of the Vision Pro inside the Apple Vision Pro app.
The 'Slide to stop' gesture replaces the previous tap-based stop button for alarms and timers, aiming to improve accuracy when choosing between snooze and stop actions. This new feature extends to timers for a consistent experience across apps. For iPad users, the Slide Over multitasking feature has been reintroduced, allowing a floating app window for multitask operations. This feature was removed in the earlier iPadOS 26 release.
The update also includes expanded sound input options, allowing users to adjust external microphone gain directly from the Control Center and select where recordings are stored when using third-party or external mics. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for users who frequently record using connected devices.
Some earlier interface experiments have been reversed. Calendar events revert to their default color-coded scheme, and Safari’s Downloads option on iPadOS returns to the address bar placement seen in prior versions. App folder labels and Settings titles now align to the left, aiming for consistency across menus.
The public launch of iOS 26.1 is expected later this month. Developers can access the beta by signing into the Apple Developer portal and enrolling their devices. After enrolling, users can head to Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates, then select iOS 26 Developer Beta.
