Intesa's Bitcoin ETF Holding Drops 94% as Staked Ethereum Stake Triples

Intesa's IBIT cut looks like a portfolio reset, not a clear BitcoinBTC-- exit
Intesa Sanpaolo's latest filing shows a sharp change in the shape of its crypto book, but not enough on its own to prove a net bearish turn on Bitcoin.
The reported moves were large. Intesa's common IBIT stake fell from 646,809 shares to 40,723, and the underlying shares tied to its held call position dropped from 2,496,500 to 18,000. At the same time, its staked EthereumENS-- ETF balance rose from 116,200 to 349,600. The filing also showed a 500,000-share-equivalent held put row, while SolanaSOL-- went from 2,817 shares to seven and XRPXRP-- remained unchanged. Even so, a 13F filed on July 31 only reflects positions held on June 30, and the options tables do not disclose net Bitcoin-options exposure.
That matters because the broader picture had already shifted earlier this year. By March 31, Intesa had expanded crypto exposure from roughly $100 million to about $235 million after adding Ethereum products, XRP exposure, and its first derivatives trade in the crypto space. That makes the period look less like a simple retreat from digital-asset risk and more like an active reshuffling of an already expanding book.

The flow shift points to tighter risk structure, not necessarily less crypto appetite
The more useful read is that Intesa changed how it wanted to express crypto exposure. Before this quarter, the bank had already disclosed $96 million in bitcoin ETF holdings across multiple products. It then expanded that book and added new Ethereum and XRP products plus derivatives activity.
The mechanism matters. Intesa's reported common IBIT holding fell to 40,723 shares, while the underlying shares tied to its held-call row fell to 18,000. The same filing showed a 500,000-share-equivalent held put row and a much larger staked Ethereum ETF position. That is consistent with a more structured setup: reduce some direct upside exposure, add a defensive options layer, and keep part of the allocation in another liquid crypto vehicle. It does not, by itself, prove the bank became bearish on Bitcoin.
What the filing can and cannot support
For now, the evidence supports a narrower conclusion: the structure of Intesa's crypto positions changed in a way that suggests tighter risk control, not a definitive verdict on Bitcoin demand.
How to read the market reaction without overinterpreting one 13F
If the reset was mainly about risk compression, the lesson is not to trade the headline at face value.
Why the filing can mislead
A 13F can quickly build a clean bearish narrative when one Bitcoin sleeve appears cut and the filing also shows a 500,000-share-equivalent held put row. But that presentation does not establish net exposure. The more relevant watchpoint is whether institutions keep adding through the clearest execution rails after the noise fades.
Intesa had already expanded its Bitcoin holdings through additional investments in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF and BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, and it had made its first derivatives trade in the crypto space. If similar behavior shows up again across European banks - more ETF accumulation, more disclosed crypto products, and more structured upside participation - then this reset looks more like portfolio mechanics than weakening demand.
- Bullish follow-through: repeated additions to core Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF vehicles, or fresh use of crypto options by major holders.
- Neutral signal: another messy 13F that changes the mix but confirms banks are still actively holding crypto products.
- Clear invalidation: sustained withdrawal from the main ETF channels or a broader pullback in disclosed institutional crypto accumulation after earlier expansion.
One more check: don't let one bank's trimming distort the wider tape. Intesa also raised its Coinbase stake and added BitGo for the first time. That is infrastructure exposure, but it still argues against an automatic "smart money is leaving" conclusion.
