Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has amassed a fortune worth at least $1.1 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index [1]. The bulk of his wealth stems from Cadence Design Systems Inc., a maker of chip design tools where Tan was the CEO for 12 years before joining Intel. Tan's tenure at Cadence and his investments in China have drawn significant criticism, including from President Donald Trump, who initially called for his resignation [2].

Tan's stock in Cadence has risen 15% since his appointment as Intel CEO in March, boosting the value of his stake to more than $29 million [2]. The stock gained 7.4% in New York following a Bloomberg report that the Trump administration is in talks with Intel to have the US government potentially take a stake in the Silicon Valley chipmaker [2].

Tan's controversial history includes his tenure at Cadence, where the company pleaded guilty to violating US export controls during his tenure and took a $140.6 million charge related to settling the cases [2]. Additionally, the US government had sent Tan a letter asking Walden to explain its investments after the San Francisco-based firm had invested in more than 100 Chinese companies [2].

Despite the controversies, Tan remains the executive chairman of venture firm Walden International and invests through Walden Catalyst Ventures, a venture arm focused on start-ups in the US, Europe, and Israel [2]. He has also been involved in other Chinese technology companies, including Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp, now China's leading chipmaker [2].

Tan's net worth does not include Walden International as his personal involvement in the group's entities is not disclosed [2]. His technical background led him to concentrate on semiconductors at a time when it was seen as a "sunset" industry, a strategy that has proven successful [2].
