Intel's New CEO Aims to Revitalize Chip Design, Attract NVIDIA, Broadcom

Intel's newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, has outlined a strategic plan that focuses on revitalizing the company's chip design capabilities and expanding its foundry services by attracting high-profile clients such as nvidia and broadcom. This shift in strategy comes as intel seeks to regain its footing in the competitive semiconductor industry.

Analyst Timothy Akuri has highlighted that Intel's recent plans emphasize the company's strengths in chip design and foundry services. The goal is to secure partnerships with major players like NVIDIA and Broadcom, who could potentially utilize Intel's 18A manufacturing process. This process is seen as a significant advancement, particularly the 18A+ version, which offers lower power consumption and is expected to be more attractive to clients.

Akuri noted that NVIDIA, led by Jensen Huang, might be more inclined to adopt Intel's 18A manufacturing process for its gaming chips. However, he cautioned that power consumption remains a substantial challenge. Intel's embedded multi-chip interconnect bridge technology is expected to enhance its chip packaging capabilities, bringing it closer to the CoWoS-L platform of a leading foundry. This could increase the likelihood of collaboration between Intel and NVIDIA.

On a positive note, Akuri mentioned that Intel's collaboration with UMC appears to be progressing smoothly, with product production potentially starting as early as 2026. This would position the Intel/UMC partnership as a significant supplier of high-pressure FinFET technology, following the leading foundry. This development could see Intel/UMC gradually entering the supply chain for major tech companies.

Akuri anticipates that more details about Intel's foundry business progress will be revealed at the upcoming Intel Innovation event on April 29. This event is expected to provide further insights into Intel's strategic initiatives and its efforts to strengthen its position in the semiconductor market.

Lip-Bu Tan's got big shoes to fill, but I'm bullish on Intel's foundry push. Let's see how it plays out.
