Indonesia Disburses IDR55 Trillion in Ramadan Bonuses for Government Workers as Part of Q1 Stimulus

The Indonesian government has allocated Rp55 trillion ($3.2 billion, based on an exchange rate of Rp16,950 per USD) to distribute Ramadan holiday bonuses (THR) to civil servants, military personnel, and police officers in early 2026. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa announced that payments will be made in the first week of Ramadan, which began on February 19, 2026, to stimulate economic activity and support household spending. This allocation marks a 10% increase from the Rp49 trillion disbursed in 2025.

The THR payment is part of a broader Rp809 trillion first-quarter stimulus package aimed at sustaining economic growth. The package includes Rp62 trillion for accelerating the Free Nutritious Meals program, Rp6 trillion for post-disaster reconstruction in Sumatra, and Rp13 trillion for additional economic measures. Minister Purbaya emphasized that timely disbursement would bolster consumption, a key driver of Indonesia's GDP, and support growth projections of 5.5–6% for Q1 2026.

Under Indonesian labor regulations, THR is a statutory obligation equivalent to one month's salary for both public and formal private-sector employees. The government's early payout aligns with this requirement while amplifying its macroeconomic impact. For 2026, civil servants, military, and police personnel will receive their bonuses ahead of schedule to enhance liquidity in the first quarter.

The stimulus effort reflects a strategic focus on short-term growth, with household consumption—accounting for over half of GDP—positioned to benefit from increased disposable income. Minister Purbaya noted that coordinated fiscal and monetary policies would sustain economic momentum, particularly amid seasonal spending during Ramadan and the Chinese New Year.

Non-compliance with THR obligations by private employers remains a regulatory priority, with penalties including fines and business license restrictions. The government has reinforced digital monitoring systems to ensure adherence, underscoring the importance of THR as both a labor right and an economic tool. According to regulatory guidance, THR calculation remains a critical component of labor compliance.

With the 2026 THR disbursement now underway, the government aims to strengthen consumer confidence and regional economic activity, positioning Indonesia for a robust start to the year.
