India's tablet market grew 20% QoQ in Q2 2025, driven by 5G-enabled devices and channel expansion by top vendors. Apple led the market with a 30% volume share, followed by Samsung with a 27% share. The 5G tablet market accounted for 95% of shipments YoY, as Indians adopted next-generation connectivity. CMR forecasts a 10-15% growth for the tablet market in 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s first fully indigenous semiconductor chip will hit the market by the end of 2025. This significant development underscores India’s push for self-reliance in the critical technology sector. The announcement was made during Modi’s 79th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, highlighting the country's commitment to rapid growth and technological independence.
Currently, six semiconductor units are operational, and four new units have received government approval. These projects span across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab, with a total investment of Rs 4,594 crore. The new units include a 3D glass semiconductor packaging unit by 3D Glass Solutions Inc, India’s first commercial silicon carbide (SiC) fabrication unit by SiCsem, and chip packaging plants by Advanced System in Package Technologies and CDIL.
Semiconductors are vital components for devices ranging from mobile phones and computers to electric vehicles and home appliances. According to industry estimates, India’s semiconductor market is expected to grow from $45-50 billion in 2024-25 to $100-110 billion by 2030 [1].
Modi emphasized that while the thought process for semiconductors existed 50-60 years ago, India’s semiconductor journey remained stalled for decades while other countries dominated the industry. He urged the youth to learn from this history and noted that the government is now pursuing semiconductors in a mission mode, focusing on rapid growth and technological independence.
The tablet market in India has also shown significant growth, driven by 5G-enabled devices and channel expansion by top vendors. In Q2 2025, the market grew by 20% quarter-over-quarter, with Apple leading the market with a 30% volume share, followed by Samsung with a 27% share. The 5G tablet market accounted for 95% of shipments year-over-year, as Indians adopted next-generation connectivity. CMR forecasts a 10-15% growth for the tablet market in 2025.
These developments indicate a strong push for technological self-reliance and growth in India, positioning the country as a significant player in the global semiconductor and consumer electronics markets.
