India Seeks Tariff Exemptions in Upcoming U.S. Trade Talks
India is set to seek exemptions from the reciprocal tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump during upcoming trade talks with American officials. The discussions are scheduled to take place from March 25 to 29, as part of ongoing bilateral trade negotiations.
According to informed sources, the Indian government will push for exemptions from the tariffs, which are set to take effect on April 2. The talks are expected to focus on the framework of a bilateral trade agreement, with formal negotiations to follow. Brendan Lynch, the U.S. Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, along with other officials, will be visiting India for these discussions.
Lynch may also meet with India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, during his visit. The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry expressed optimism about the upcoming talks, stating that they anticipate productive and constructive discussions with the visiting U.S. delegation. The goal is to expand and deepen bilateral trade and economic relations in a mutually beneficial manner.
India, known for having one of the highest average tariff levels among major economies, has been a key target of Trump's reciprocal tariff policy. The U.S. President has repeatedly criticized India's import tariffs as unfair to American businesses and has indicated that India will not be exempt from these measures.
Since Trump took office, the Modi government in India has taken several steps to address key issues of concern to the U.S., including trade and immigration. During Modi's visit to the White House in February, both leaders agreed to strengthen trade ties and aim to reach a bilateral agreement by November. They also discussed India's plans to increase energy imports from the U.S.
In response to U.S. concerns, India has reduced import duties on a range of products, including high-end items like bourbon whiskey and Harley-DavidsonHOG-- motorcycles. There are also reports that Indian officials are considering further reductions in tariffs on automobiles, certain agricultural products, and chemicals.
The U.S. Embassy in India emphasized the importance of these discussions, stating that Lynch's visit underscores Washington's commitment to advancing the trade relationship with India. The embassy expressed a desire to continue these discussions in a constructive, fair, and forward-looking manner.
