Heavy rain in Kerala weakens, IMD downgrades alert from red to orange for Kannur and Kasaragod. Yellow alert issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts. Rainfall activity expected to reduce in coming days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has downgraded the heavy rainfall alert in Kerala, reducing the red alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts to an orange alert. This change comes as the rainfall activity is expected to reduce in the coming days. The orange alert indicates a possible rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow warning is in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts, with possible downpour in the range of 7cm to 12 cm [1].

The IMD has also warned of strong winds with speeds reaching up to 60 kmph along the Kerala coast, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions. The district administrations of Thrissur, Kannur, and Kasaragod have declared a holiday for all schools on Wednesday as a precautionary measure. In Kannur, mining activities and tourist entry to sites have been prohibited due to the red alert [1].

Piravom in Ernakulam district recorded the highest rainfall in the state over the 24-hour period ended at 8.30 am on August 5, with 22 cm, followed by Peechi with 13 cm of rainfall during the same period [1].
